"The Grief Era" by Sakura Pups
The throes of time sometimes make it hard to recognize all the pioneers that can crop up in a movement. Depending on who you ask, cybergrind is still a fairly new genre. Having it's humble beginnings in the late 90s / early 00s, the genre has gone through many changes throughout it's existence.
One artist in particular has been long overdue for a highlight, and that artist would be Sakura Pups.
Terra aka Sakura Pups / Microdose on Cybergrind has been involved with the genre of cybergrind almost as long as it has existed. She was hustling back during the MySpace era with Sakura Pups and continues to this day. Releasing mind boggling, avant garde electronic infused punk music at any cost.
In the early 2010s, the project would take a hiatus until a decade later, Terra would revive the project and continue to release music in the next wave of cybergrind that would emerge in the 2020's.
And here, is where "The Grief Era" comes in.
"The Grief Era" is a selection of releases (Grief EP, Broken Glass EP and The White Rabbit Made Me Do It) chosen by Terra that represent a time of introspection.
Originally released throughout the early 2010's, this collection of songs have been remastered by the lovely Bootsy of Sleeping on Stardust and put onto physical media for the first time to commemorate Terra's incredible contribution to the genre. She lives and breathes cybergrind so it's only fitting a decade spanning project get the cassette treatment!
If you wanna hear something unconventional, noisy and outright strange, then definitely check out "The Grief Era". It captures a very specific moment in time in the cybergrind genre that both feels like a throwback and contemporary listen.
